The News

The Jordanian Armed Forces announced that they had launched strikes on "target locations" in Syria in retaliation for an attack on a church service in Karak last week, which resulted in the deaths of nine people and injuries to 34 others. Syrian medical sources reported that five individuals, including women, children, and the elderly, were killed in the aerial strike targeting a village in southern Daraa province. The Jordanian forces stated that they had targeted and killed "several terrorists" without providing further details.

The Jordanian government said it had coordinated with the Syrian government prior to the attack, but Syria confirmed that it was not informed. Syria closed the Nassib border crossing with Jordan following the attack, indicating that all passenger and trade traffic in both directions had been halted "to ensure the safety of travelers and workers at the crossing." Syrian authorities mentioned that they had opened direct communication channels with Jordanian officials and conducted comprehensive investigations to uncover the full circumstances of the attack.

Earlier on Monday, Jordanian security authorities announced the arrest of three individuals, including two brothers and their brother-in-law, at the attack site. The General Intelligence Department stated that the arrested individuals had been hiding in an abandoned house in Karak before dawn. Jordan's Interior Minister Ma'yan Al-Fraiha said that all attackers were Jordanian and had been hiding in a building in a nearby village.

Analysis & Context

Analytically, this attack reflects ongoing tensions between Jordan and Syria. The church attack in Karak indicates the presence of extremist groups within Jordan, raising concerns about internal security. In a broader context, these events highlight the long-term impacts of the Syrian civil war on neighboring countries. Lastly, the closure of the border crossing underscores the attack's impact on economic and trade relations between the two countries.
