The News

The Tompkins County District Attorney has reopened the case after a woman filed a civil lawsuit against Cornell University and law enforcement authorities, accusing them of insufficient handling of her sexual assault case. According to the documents filed in the lawsuit, the woman, known as Jane Doe, alleges that she was raped and drugged by seven men at a Kappa Iota fraternity house at Cornell University in October 2024. Doe stated that she was under the influence of ketamine and marijuana, making her unable to give consent.

Thomas Geoghegan, Doe's attorney, told CBS that after reporting the incident to the police, she was not contacted by Tompkins County investigators or any specialized sexual assault investigators. He added that the university expelled two fraternity members while the other five received lesser sanctions.

In a statement, District Attorney Matthew Van Houten said his decision to reopen the case came after new evidence was presented in the civil lawsuit. He added that his team would present the case to the Tompkins County Grand Jury for a decision on whether to press charges.

Cornell, in a statement, said it conducted a thorough internal investigation, heard testimony from both sides, and imposed sanctions on the accused. The university also stated that it permanently closed the Kappa Iota fraternity following the incident. In response to the allegations that the sanctions were too lenient, the university said it imposed stringent penalties on those involved.

Jeremy Saland, the attorney for one of the accused, denied the rape allegations against his client, asserting that Snapchat messages do not constitute evidence of rape. He said his client did not communicate with the victim in any form.

Analysis & Context

Reopening the investigation into the Cornell case reflects the ongoing challenges in addressing campus sexual assaults. This case highlights the need for more effective investigation and accountability measures in universities. In a broader context, American universities face increasing pressure to improve their procedures related to sexual assault and protect students. Data indicates a prevalence of sexual assault on college campuses, prompting educational institutions to develop more effective prevention and support strategies.
