The News

Israel is heading towards a decisive parliamentary election on Tuesday after three years of regional war, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu competing to form a government against his rival Gadi Eshukot. Recent opinion polls show a near-even split between the ruling coalition and the main opposition bloc, suggesting the outcome may be closely contested. It is estimated that half a million first-time voters will cast ballots, while around 70,000 Israelis abroad will vote in the election.

On Saturday night, large crowds of opposition supporters gathered in central Tel Aviv to demand a change in government. A 21-year-old voter named Omar said, "We are optimistic. I want peace and security, and I want to end corruption and remove the extreme religious."

Eshukot, a former military commander with a calm demeanor and Moroccan background, emphasized his approach in a community center in Ramle, stating that the election revolves around the identity of the Jewish state and its future nature. He noted that the state must be democratic, liberal, and tolerant. This reflects Eshukot's vision of Israel as a state that accepts diversity and equality.

In contrast, Netanyahu relies on a strategy that focuses on national security, emphasizing that Israel needs strong leadership to confront regional threats. Shlomi Bashar, one of Netanyahu's supporters, told the BBC, "If he had been woken up by the army at the right time, it wouldn't have happened. He bears responsibility, but after October 7, the entire Middle East changed."

Polls show that a majority of Israelis support a state investigation into the October 2023 attack, with more than 70% of Jewish Israelis supporting such an investigation. Eshukot aims to attract voters by promising to conduct such an investigation.

Analysis & Context

Analytically, the current Israeli elections highlight the deepening political and social divisions within the country. In the broader context, these elections illustrate how Israeli politics are influenced by security threats and internal challenges. They also show how the far-right is attempting to exploit fear and anxiety among voters to boost its support. At the same time, Eshukot is trying to attract voters by focusing on social, economic, and democratic issues, reflecting shifts in Israeli voter trends.
